I just bought a 2011 limited AWD. The controls on the steering wheel are not lit up at night. However, friends with the same car have their steering wheel controls backlit. The dealer told me sometimes Ford changes things and they may have stopped backlighting these controls. I don't buy this. Makes no sense that the "hands free" controls would not be lit up for night travel. Can't see a thing on the steering wheel at night. Anyone else have this problem?

Welcome to the forum! You have a great vehicle there!

I also call BS on the dealer.

This issue has come up before - it's a fuse, don't remember which one.

Does the light for the gear selector work? The power mirrors? I think they are on the same fuse - not sure, though.

Thanks for the reply's. The light on the shifter does not light up either. The car is still at the dealer getting the leaking sun roof fixed, again. I called and talked with the manager and told him to fix the backlighting and I would not be in to pick it up until the roof is fixed and I can see the steering wheel controls at night. I'm in no rush as I have been driving his car for the last week +.

I looked in the wiring diagrams for the 2010 Flex, it makes no distinction between models in this area, so they are probably all the same. There is a fuse that feeds all of the illumination, not just the steering wheel. So if that fuse was out, according to the book, all of your dash switch lights would be out. So I have conflicting information.
I'll do some more research. The wiring diagrams I have are confusing, and page references are inaccurate. I'm used to reading wiring diagrams, but these are a bit odd. It does agree that the steering wheel switches do have lighting.

Did you ever get an answer from the dealer or resolve the issue? I just purchased a preowned (program car, 8k miles) with the same issue. The shifter, steering wheel nor the dash switches light up. I asked the dealer and they said that was the way it was designed. I can't believe a vehicle as advanced as this would be missing something so simple.

That is NOT how it is designed. But the lights on the center stack, steering wheel and shifter will come on when the light sensor determines it is getting dark out so you may not see them in daylight. Either find a different dealer or have that dealer look into it farther, like maybe asking Ford rather than making an uneducated guess.

I have the same problem with my 2011 Flex. No lights on steering wheel or shifter and a few other dash areas.

Have any of you found a repair or a dealer that can repair this?

I also purchased a 2011 SEL AWD with the problem described above. Took it to the dealer and they discovered one of the control modules (body computer) had an internal short which caused fuse #10 to blow. They had to replace the module. Overnight part. Seems to work good now but I haven't tried it during the night to confirm.

So, if you have this problem it is most likely a faulty module.

If it's just the steering wheel then it might be the clockspring.

The following was not working when I initially purchased the vehicle:

Exterior puddle lights not coming on when open doors.
Headlight switch backlights not working.
Upper dash area buttons (trip, info, TCS, etc) backlight not working.
Steering wheel button backlights not working.
Gear selection backlights not working.

The service write up list the bad module as a "smart module". The service advisor explained it as a body control module which is just a fancy name for a on-board computer which controls the various body-related devices and buttons.

Hi - I am late to this conversation. I have a 2009 SEL experiencing the same problem (not illumination for steering wheel, upper dash buttons, gear shift) and my the back up radar is not working. No idea is that is even connected with this issue. I have checked all the fuses and replaced ones that needed - with no change. I have heard that a technician can "flash" the BCM and reset this, but I am concerned about doing this. Does anyone have any resolution to this issue?

Thank you in advance
