Despite Ford's comments that they did not expect the introduction of the Explorer to have a negative affect on Flex sales, the opposite appears to be true. Ford sales overall for the month of January increased 19% excluding Volvo and Mercury. Sales of the F-series +30% , the new Explorer +73%, Edge +43% and Escape +30% all helped put Ford in positive territory for the month reported Automotive News. The Flex -18%, Mustang -33% and Taurus -23% all had a disappointing month. Hopefully future sales of Explorers will not come at the expense of the Flex as many dealers predict. If so Ford will be hard pressed to continue to carry a model which cannot support itself just to have a broad portfolio. Ford has shown that it is capable of making the tough decisions to drop individual models or complete car lines if these products are dragging down the bottom line.
