What vehicle did your Flex replace?
Posted 03 January 2011 - 09:45 PM
bought a 2009 SEL Flex. Love it.
Sold it because i really got sick of the 12.9mpg and $1800 for tires
so far I'm getting 6 mpg better in town and around 8-10 hwy

So I won't miss anything, I get a few more things (Nav, camera, power liftgate, tow package), and I'm as happy as a clam.
Prior to that, the T-X replaced a Mercury Sable Taurus Wagon. Any surprise? I do wish they had made a Mercury version of the Taurus X, but I can't imagine what a Mercury version of the Flex would turn out like......

I do need to address this again. Actually, when I test drove our Freestyle back before we ordered in in 2005, I much preferred the way the FWD handled. That was the reason I got the FWD Flex. Now that I have had it for a couple of months and driven it around in what is turning out to be a pretty significant winter as far as snow and ice goes..... I kind of wish I would have gotten the AWD. I never had an issue with the FWD Freestyle on slippery conditions, but the Flex seems to be much more effected by those conditions. I do know that when it's time to buy again, I'm probably going to be thinking AWD if I stay with the Flex.
Let me get this straight. You live in Minnesota where the roof of the Metro Dome just fell in because of a snow dump and you're NOT a fan of AWD? According to the EPA ratings, the FWD is 2 MPH better than the AWD model. With gas at $3 a gallon, driving 15000 annually, the extra cost of AWD comes out to 1.5 cents per mile or about $250 a year.
The above figures are based on the combined EPA rating of 18 MPG for the AWD verses 20 MPG for the FWD. In addition to being my highway cruiser, my Flex takes me skiing and pulls my boat out of the water on slippery boat ramps. So far, with AWD, it does all my requirements nicely.
The Flex is my 2nd AWD vehicle (the other one being my '06 Jeep Commander). I was a bit leery about buying the Jeep because of the AWD, but so far I haven't spent one extra penny that I can tell for any additional maintenance with AWD. Yes, there is that 1.5 cents per mile for gas, but when I enter that TWILIGHT zone where 4WD would be safer, I'm already in AWD.
PS In nearly 5 years of driving the AWD Jeep, I never had to use the option of going to full 4WD, but then I'm not a "rock climber".
BTW...first impressions of the vehicle.....LOVE IT! Love the way it handles, corners, rides etc. etc. We have gotten much better gas mileage than we expected as well. We just got back from a trip to Florida last week. We put 3500 miles on in that trip, and we were getting 26-27 MPG in the southern states. That isn't true once we hit these cold climes up here where they add a bit too much ethenol to the gas. It definitely effects mileage.

1987 Volvo 240DL wagon...actually my Step son will be taking it over, he turns 16 the end of march.
( it is alot like me square, old, and thinks it's fast)
What I will miss:
the simplistic part of it.
rear wheel drive, thorsen style diff makes for great drifting in the snow
sharp handling (with the summer wheels anyway)
What I will not miss:
harsh ride (lowered with IPD springs, heavy swaybars, strut tower braces, rear torque arms, etc...)
What I couldn't live without that the Flex has:
EB throttle response

I'll miss... can't think of a thing. The Pac was a nice unit BUT
Flex beats it in every way - power, ride, handling, towing, looks, comfort, Sync!

It was a great car but had ridiculously expensive tires. Shocks gave out after towing our trailer across the country to motorcycle shows.
Miss the onboard storage space - cubbies, cup holders, height and sliding side doors and ability to access GPS on the fly (passenger only, of course).
LOVE the sound system,
Unbelievably quiet ride

I miss the fact that I could park it anywhere, haul anything and not worry, cause it was a beater.
Looking forward to better gas milage and dependability.

Styling, tranny smoothness, low end torque, trailer hitch
Will not miss from the Bonnie:
Wind noise, lack of storage space for kids hockey equipment
Can't live without from Flex:
Interior space for people/cargo
