Because existing sources of auto reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer.

Results are updated four times a year, so it's possible to provide reliability information on new models like the Flex quickly. Fords have been doing very well recently, but with a new model there's always a question mark. How soon we can remove this question mark depends on how quickly owners sign up and participate.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to the results for free.

Only four owners signed up so far. I've had a much quicker response for other new Ford models. Because of slow sales? Or maybe it's just early.

Well, whenever we get enough participants I'll start providing results.

We've had a surge in recent weeks--now 22 signed up.

More will be needed for a full result, but this is very promising. Probably a partial result in February, and a full result in May.

Help make this happen:

Michael,

Just signed up! Can't wait to see some solid reliability results in a couple of months. I'm loving my Flex, but have already had a problem with Speedometer! I think it was a fluke, but we will see!

Probably a fluke.

TrueDelta has released an initial Car Reliability Survey result for the Ford Flex. The sample size is marginal, but hardly anyone responding has reported even a minor repair so far. So when we do have a full result in May it's likely to be "better than average."

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May, August, and November, so additional participants would certainly be helpful.

TrueDelta now has a separate results page for each model. The one of the Ford Flex:

Updated result soon. Great participation by Flex owners lately. The more owners participate, the better the information we can provide to everyone.

We've now released a full result for the Flex based on owner experiences through the end of March. This is the first reliability stat for the Flex anywhere. A big thank you to everyone who helped make this result possible.

With a repair frequency of 38 repairs per 100 cars per year, the new Ford Flex scores a bit better than the also new 2009 Honda Pilot. Though it missed a "green light" by a single point, this is a very good result for an all-new model.

These cars are of course young, and it remains to be seen how they'll fare as they age. With prompt quarterly updates, we'll track them closely. The more participants we have, the better the information we can provide.

We've updated results for the Flex based on owner experiences through the end of June. With a repair frequency of 78 repairs per 100 cars per year, the Ford Flex has a higher repair frequency than earlier, and while still "about average" is trending in the wrong direction. Notably, the stat for the Lincoln MKS is similar.

A big thank you, once again, to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in November and February. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and also provide a result for the new 2010s. Especially need more 2010s.

Updated results again next month.

We're going to start providing new stats for the odds of requiring no repairs and the odds of getting a lemon. These require larger sample sizes, so additional participants would be helpful.

We've updated results for the Flex based on owner experiences through the end of September. With a repair frequency of 74 repairs per 100 cars per year, the Ford Flex has a higher repair frequency than earlier, but is still "about average."

We've also introduced two new statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop. We don't have these for the Flex yet, though, because they require a larger number of responses. So if you aren't already participating, please consider doing so.

A big thank you, once again, to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in February and May. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and also provide a result for the new 2010s. Especially need more 2010s.

Currently 94 owners signed up for the 2009 and 21 for the 2010. Which is outstanding. The more owners participate, the better the information we can provide to everyone.

Especially need more 2010s.

Now 92 2009s and 28 2010s. Better, but we're going to need more participants for the latter to have a full result for it in May.

I will be signing up with a 2010 Ecoboost Limited. However, I am waiting on the delivery. could be another 6 weeks min. I am signed up with my Chrysler 2008 Town and Country (yea the one on your site with all the problems)...so I will be deleting that one soon.

We've updated results for the Flex based on owner experiences through December 31, 2009. With a repair frequency of 64 repair trips per 100 cars per year, the Ford Flex is about average.

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop. We don't have these for the Flex yet, though, because they require a larger number of responses. So if you aren't already participating, please consider doing so.

In the case of the 2009 Flex, the percentage with no repairs is about 57, and the percentage of lemons is less than one.

A big thank you, once again, to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May and August. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and also provide a result for the new 2010s. Especially need more 2010s.

Recently enhanced the related repair history survey so that it can (optionally) be used as a personal car maintenance record.

As always, more participants would be helpful. Updated Car Reliability Survey results in May.

We've updated results for the Flex based on owner experiences through March 31, 2010. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2010: 25, better than average

2009: 55, about average

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop. We don't have these for the Flex yet, though, because they require a larger number of responses. So if you aren't already participating, please consider doing so.

In the case of the 2009 Flex, the percentage with no repairs is about 61, and the percentage of lemons is about 3.

A big thank you, once again, to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and also provide a result for the new 2010s. Especially need more 2010s.

Updated results next month.

I'd like to provide separate stats for the EB, but this will require more participants with each engine for the 2010+.

Additional 2011s would be especially helpful.
